CURRICULUM VITAEHalldor Gislason – architect/designer/project leader

Current position

Professor in Strategic Design and project leader in the  Faculty of Design at KHiO, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway; and in Institute Superiore de Artes e Cultura in Maputo, Mozambique.

Currently located in Maputo, Mozambique as well as in Oslo on a special mission to support the establishment of the first higher education academy of art and design in Mozambique and social design action projects, both directed at innovation, entreprenurship, design and gender.

Oslo National Academy of the Arts faculty running programs in Communication Design, Fashion, Costume, Furniture and Interior Architecture.  Doing research in design society, innovation and cultural studies.

Teaching courses on alchemy, semiology, urban studies, history of the image, history of design, ethics of design and the oscillations of fashion. Runs a private design and architectural practice, designs buildings, exhibitions and landscape projects. Makes business plans, feasibility studies and interiors.

Professional Experience

2010 – Professor in Strategic Design, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway

2009 – Research and activities position in Maputo, Mozambique to test socially responsive projects and establishment of new academy in the country.

2006- Leader of Cirrus, the network of design higher education schools in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

2005-2009 Dean of the Faculty of Design at KHiO, Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

2009 – Research Project evaluator for the Austrian Research Council.

2005-2009 Various consultancy positions in design and innovation in Norway, board of IKADA, the innovation incubator, research projects funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

2007-2009 Mentor and consultant in Norsk Form, The Norwegian Design Center on socially responsive design and sustainability.

2001 – External Examiner in various schools of design and architecture like Estionian Academy of Arts, Tallin; Dalhousie School of Architecture, Canada; Portsmouth School of Architecture, University of Portsmouth, England and various others.

2001-2004 – Dean of the Department of Design and Architecture, Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavík, Iceland.

1993-2001 – Senior lecturer at Portsmouth School of Architecture, University of Portsmouth, England, teaching architectural theory, criticism and philosophy in addition to studio teaching.

1992-1999 – One of the directors of Distance Communications Limited, in England, running international projects in art exchange and exhibitions in seven in Europe.

1980-1993 – Running an architectural practice that he founded, now named GLÁMA/KÍM, www.glamakim.is

Professional Honours

Competitions. Southend Pier Competition, England 1978, 1st commended entry.

Crown Decorative Products Ltd., Colours in Architecture, 1980. Award.

Designers’ Day, Reykjavík Iceland, 1st price.

Borholuhús – Design competition for Geothermal pump stations in the city of Reykjavík 1991, Honour award. Competition for a Municipal Service Station in Mosfellsbaer, 1992, 1st and 2nd price.

Projects

Cultural Centre located in the harbour of Kopavogur, Iceland.  Gardarsholm, a cultural centre about sustainability, Nordic sailing history and culture in Iceland, Iceland.  MYVATN NATURE BATHS, an entrepreneurial project in the North of Iceland.

Many private houses in Iceland.

Larger projects: Útvegsbankinn (KBBANK), Íslandsbanki (Glitnir), branch offices in Iceland, Áhaldahús Mosfellsbæjar, Kaupþing in Reykjavík, Prentsmiðjan Oddi, Sigurplast ehf, Mos., Plastprent, R., Verðbréfamarkaður Íslandsbanka. and many more.

Writings

Hönnun, Auðlind til Framtíðar, a book about design and creative industries in national policy for Iceland. April 2007.  Currently writing a book named: WHAT IS DESIGN? A book on the theory and practice of design in present society.

Myvatn Nature Baths, in Proceedings from the conference on Entrepreneurship and Design in Oslo, May 2004.

Borgarmynstur, a compendium book in urban studies, published in 2003.

On The Metaphysics of Form, published in 2004.

Editor of the science review JÖKULL, an annual publication of the Icelandic Glaciological Society. Various writings in specialist magazines on architecture and design, and also in mainstream magazines on popular culture and philosophy.
